Universal Healthcare Insurance model

Sláintecare is Ireland’s reform plan to create a universal, single-tier health and social care system based on patient need, not ability to pay, moving away from its current two-tier system. 

Sláintecare 2025+ aims to forge the way towards accessible, affordable, high-quality, healthcare for the people of Ireland when they need it, where they need it.

I would respectfully disagree with the minister on this point. When hospitals are appropriately staffed, with adequate infrastructure, people will apply for available posts. Recruitment challenges set in where chronic under-resourcing in terms of staff and infrastructure result in a difficult work environment. Over time, this leads to reputational harm, and this can spiral. The only option in this situation is to make adequate resources available to operational staff. If this means a Universal Healthcare Insurance model of healthcare delivery, then maybe big changes are required. Jennifer Carroll MacNeill said recruitment is already a “persistent” issue within the health service.
